Hello everyone!

Are you fully aware of your rights as an employee? Understanding what you’re entitled to is crucial for protecting yourself and making informed decisions about your job and career progression. Whether you’re working in Ireland or the UK, here’s a handy guide to some essential employment rights you should know.

Ireland: Key Employee Rights

Minimum Wage: In Ireland, most employees are entitled to a minimum wage, which in 2025 stands at €10.50 per hour. However, exceptions exist for workers under 18 or those in their first job. For more details, the Citizens Information website remains a valuable resource.

Working Hours: If you’re working full-time, you’re limited to a maximum of 48 hours per week, including overtime. You are also entitled to at least 11 hours of rest between working days and a minimum of one day off per week. Part-time employees have proportional entitlements.

Annual Leave: You’re entitled to a minimum of 20 days of paid annual leave each year, pro-rated for part-time employees. Additionally, you can carry over up to one week’s leave to the next year if you’re unable to take it, due to illness or other reasons.

Sick Leave: After six months with an employer, you’re entitled to sick pay, which must be at least 50% of your normal weekly pay, capped at €203 per week.

Redundancy Pay: Should you face redundancy, you might receive a statutory redundancy payment, calculated as two weeks’ pay for each year of service, along with one additional week’s pay.

There are more rights and protections at your disposal. The Citizens Information website and the Workplace Relations Commission continue to offer excellent resources for further information. Should you have any concerns about your employment, consider reaching out for support.

UK: Key Employee Rights

Minimum Wage: The minimum wage in the UK as of 2025 is £9.50 per hour for employees aged 23 and over. Rates vary for younger workers, with £8.20 for those aged 18-22 and £6.45 for those aged 16-17. These rates are reviewed annually by the UK government.

Holiday Entitlement: UK workers have a right to at least 5.6 weeks of paid holiday each year, which can include bank holidays, although employers can choose to offer more.

Sick Leave: If unwell, you can self-certify your absence for up to seven days. For longer periods, a doctor’s note is required. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) of £96.35 per week applies if you’re absent due to illness for four or more consecutive days.

Maternity and Paternity Leave: Expecting or adopting parents are entitled to leave. Maternity leave can extend to 52 weeks, with up to 39 weeks paid. Fathers are entitled to two weeks of paid paternity leave.

Protection Against Discrimination: Employees are safeguarded against discrimination based on age, race, gender, disability, and sexual orientation. It is illegal for employers to treat employees unfavourably due to these characteristics.

Protection Against Unfair Dismissal: Your employer must have a legitimate reason for dismissal and follow due process. Certain situations, like acts of gross misconduct, might permit dismissal without notice.
